What comes in the Kickstarter Edition, how the two-player asymmetry works, and whether this deck-builder fits your table. Straight answers, no hype.
Quick answer
The Kickstarter Edition of War of the Worlds: The New Wave is a two-player asymmetrical deck-building game with a playing board, set several years after H.G. Wells's original story. If you want a head-to-head strategy game where one player controls the Martian invasion and the other defends humanity, this edition gives you the full core experience.
What makes this edition different from a retail copy
The Kickstarter Edition is the version offered during the game's crowdfunding campaign. Our catalog lists the contents as the rulebook and the game components needed for two players, including the playing board. We do not have a verified list of stretch goals or bonus items that may have been included in the campaign, so treat any unlisted extras as unconfirmed. If you are comparing this to a retail edition, the core game is the same asymmetrical deck-builder; the Kickstarter label mainly signals the campaign version.
How the two-player asymmetry actually plays
One player takes the Martian side, arriving on a giant spaceship that lands in a backwater Scottish district; the other player defends. Each side builds a deck, but their goals and card pools differ, so the game is not a mirror match. That asymmetry is the main draw for players who like variable powers and direct confrontation, but it also means new players should expect a learning game before the sides feel balanced.
Who this game is not for
If your group prefers cooperative games, party games, or anything that plays well with more than two, this is a poor fit: it is designed for exactly two players. Solo players should also look elsewhere unless a fan-made variant is acceptable, because no solo mode is listed in the supplied product information.
Common questions about the Kickstarter Edition
- What is included in the box?
- The supplied product information lists the rulebook and the components for a two-player board game, including the playing board. It does not list any Kickstarter-exclusive stretch goals, so we cannot confirm additional bonus items beyond what is described. Check the rulebook and component list against the product page images if you need a complete inventory.
- Is this a standalone game or an expansion?
- It is a standalone two-player game. The description presents it as a complete asymmetrical deck-building experience, not an expansion that requires a base game.
- How many players can play?
- The game is designed for two players. No other player counts are listed in the supplied information. If you regularly have three or more players, plan to split into pairs or choose a different game.
- What is the play time and complexity?
- The supplied catalog facts do not include a play time or complexity rating. As a deck-building strategy game with asymmetric sides, expect a moderate learning curve, but we cannot give a precise minute count. Set aside extra time for your first game to learn both sides' decks.
- Is this the same as the retail edition?
- The Kickstarter Edition is the crowdfunding version. The core game is the same two-player asymmetric deck-builder, but any campaign-specific extras are not confirmed in our product data. If you specifically want campaign extras, verify the contents with the seller before ordering.
